Khatu Shyam Ji — Who is Baba Shyam?

Khatu Shyam Ji (खाटू श्याम जी) is a Hindu deity worshipped at Shri Khatu Shyam Ji Mandir in Khatu village, Sikar district, Rajasthan, India. Khatu Shyam Ji is the Kali Yuga avatar of Barbarik (बर्बरीक) — the son of Ghatotkacha and grandson of Bhima (the Pandava). He is worshipped as the deity who fulfils the wishes of devotees who have lost hope in life — hence the popular saying “Haare ka Sahara, Baba Shyam Hamara” (हारे का सहारा, बाबा श्याम हमारा).

The temple at Khatu is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in Rajasthan attracting over 50 lakh (5 million) devotees annually. During Falgun Mela, over 20 lakh devotees visit in just 3 days — making it one of the largest religious gatherings in North India.

इतिहास — History of Khatu Shyam Ji Temple

खाटू श्याम जी मंदिर की स्थापना 1027 ईस्वी में राजा रूपसिंह चौहान ने करवाई थी। The temple was built in 1027 CE by Raja Rupsingh Chauhan of Khatu after Baba Shyam’s sheesh (divine head) was discovered buried in the ground at Khatu village.

According to scripture, after the Mahabharata war, Lord Krishna immersed Barbarik’s head in the Rupavati river. In Kali Yuga, the head resurfaced at Khatu — a cow was observed pouring milk from her udders onto the spot daily. When the ground was excavated, a divine head was found. Raja Rupsingh Chauhan received Baba Shyam’s command in a dream to build a temple — which still stands today.

बर्बरीक की कथा — Barbarik Story

Barbarik was the son of Ghatotkacha (who was the son of Bhima, the Pandava). He was an extraordinary warrior who possessed Teen Baan (तीन बाण — Three Divine Arrows) — capable of marking all enemies with the first arrow, marking all allies with the second, and destroying everything marked with the third. With just three arrows Barbarik could win any war in the universe.

Before the Mahabharata war, Barbarik vowed to join the losing side. Lord Krishna — disguised as a Brahmin — asked for his head as donation (Sheesh Daan). Without hesitation, Barbarik sacrificed his head — the greatest act of dana in Hindu mythology. Pleased, Krishna blessed him: “In Kali Yuga you will be worshipped as ‘Shyam’ at Khatu. Those who have lost hope will find support at your doorstep.”
